Infectious Diseases: From Prevention to Overcoming Antimicrobial Resistance

Infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are persistent global health issues that demand integrated strategies. These include prevention, responsible antimicrobial use, and the development of new therapies. Vaccination plays a vital role in preventing infections and decreasing antimicrobial consumption. Meanwhile, antimicrobial stewardship is crucial for maintaining the efficacy of current treatments. Advances in biomaterials and drug-delivery systems aim to enhance targeted therapy, extend antimicrobial effects, and minimise side effects, opening new avenues for treating challenging infections. Additionally, phage therapy stands out as a promising alternative for combating multidrug-resistant bacteria, emphasising the increasing importance of precision and innovative treatments in addressing AMR.
