Ivan Varga

Professor Ivan Varga is a Slovak anatomist, histologist, and embryologist. He holds two PhD degrees from Comenius University in Bratislava, in Anthropology and in Pathological Anatomy and Forensic Medicine, and was appointed Full Professor of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology in 2018.

He serves as Vice-Dean for Science, Research, and PhD Studies and Head of the Institute of Histology and Embryology at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava. He also holds visiting professorships at Rīga Stradiņš University (Latvia) and Medicampus Europeo (Malta). Between 2010 and 2013, he worked as a Clinical Embryologist at the University Center for Reproductive Medicine.

His research focuses on human lymphoid and reproductive organ development, reproductive biology, anatomical and histological terminology, stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, and clinical anatomy. He has authored or co-authored 10 textbooks and more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, with over 3,000 citations and an H-index of 26.

Professor Varga has contributed to several major anatomical references, including Last’s Anatomy, Nerves and Nerve Injuries, and Bergman’s Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Human Anatomic Variation. His textbook Memorix Histology received the Jaroslav Jirsa Prize for the best textbook awarded by Charles University. In 2021, he received both the Jessenius Award and the ESET Science Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Slovakia.

Internationally, he is active in anatomical science organizations, including FIPAT and the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Bratislava Medical Journal and sits on several international editorial boards. He is a frequent invited speaker at international scientific congresses and will organize the 30th International Symposium on Morphological Sciences in Bratislava in 2028.
