Hugo Sarmento

Hugo Sarmento is Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education, University of Coimbra, where he serves as Subdirector for Research and coordinates the Coimbra pole of CIPER — the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Human Performance, rated Excellent by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

His work asks how sporting expertise emerges and how performance can be meaningfully measured and modelled. It spans three connected lines: talent identification and development, match and performance analysis, and the application of artificial intelligence to sport performance. He has published more than 260 scientific articles, seven of which rank in the top 1% of citations worldwide, and is co-author of Artificial Intelligence in Sport Performance Analysis (Routledge, 2021). Since 2023 he has featured consecutively among the world's top 2% most influential researchers in the Stanford/Elsevier ranking.
